August is starting to pack its bags, but Haldimand County clearly has no intention of quietly escorting summer to the door.

The next few days are packed with reasons to get out of the house, whether your idea of a good time involves live music, cards, cars, books, fresh local food, getting creative or discovering an activity you didn't know existed until five minutes ago. This is also an exceptionally good week for anyone who enjoys a little friendly competition. Or unfriendly competition disguised as friendly competition, which is basically how card games work.

There's plenty happening during the daytime too, which is excellent news for anyone whose evening plans increasingly involve pyjamas and refusing to leave the house again. Local clubs, libraries, community organizations and businesses have filled the calendar with things to do throughout the week, so you don't have to wait until Friday to have a social life.

We're also firmly into that stretch of summer when the local produce is fantastic, the classic cars are everywhere, and nobody wants to acknowledge that September is lurking around the corner. Don't. We still have time.

One of the best things about putting this newsletter together is seeing just how much happens in Haldimand County on an ordinary Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. A lot of it comes from volunteers, service clubs, small businesses and community organizations that keep putting things on and giving people somewhere to go.

So scroll through, find something that sounds good and go do it. Try something different. Take a friend. Drag along the person who always says there's nothing to do around here.

Cypres 55+ has bingo, yoga and Start With Art today. Wednesday features tai chi, crafts and knitting, plus scrapbooking, while Thursday brings book club and yoga. Retirement is apparently exhausting.

Cool & Classic Car Night rolls into Scoops Diner at the Caledonia Fairgrounds Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. Come for the cars, stay for the unsolicited horsepower statistics.

The Haldimand Horticultural Society meets Thursday at 7 p.m. at St. Paul’s Anglican Church on Orkney Street East. Create your own floral bouquet to take home free of charge. Finally, permission to leave a meeting with the centrepiece.

The Caledonia Farmers’ Market is open Thursday from 2 to 7 p.m. for your weekly reminder that tomatoes can, in fact, taste like something.

Thursday is busy at the Caledonia Legion, with euchre at 2 and 7 p.m. and darts at 7. Choose your competitive outlet accordingly.

Toronto Motorsports Park has open car lapping Wednesday starting at 5 p.m. for anyone whose idea of unwinding involves considerably more horsepower.

The Cayuga Legion has euchre Tuesday at 7:30 p.m., followed by darts Wednesday at 7:30. Different projectiles, similar levels of concentration.

Community Living Haldimand hosts a Wellness Labyrinth Workshop Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at 2256 River Road.

The Cayuga Book Club meets at the library Thursday at 6 p.m. to discuss I’m Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy. Possibly the only book club selection where the title itself needs a moment.

GrandErie Home Hardware hosts a Turkish Mosaic Creations workshop Thursday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Finally, a Home Hardware project you have a reasonable chance of finishing the same day.

The Dunnville Youth Impact Centre hosts a free brunch this morning from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Catch the Ace at Julia’s Charity has an estimated jackpot of more than $11,000. Tickets are available online or at the charity seven days a week. At this point, checking the jackpot has become part of Dunnville’s weekly routine.

The Dunnville Farmers Market runs today from 2 to 7 p.m. Your tomatoes have entered their annual two-week period of being absolutely spectacular.

The Over 60 Euchre Club meets Thursday from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Dunnville Optimist Club. Two hours of euchre is plenty of time for several grudges to develop.

Special Olympics Bingo takes over the Optimist Hall Tuesday at 6:20 p.m. Bring your dabber and prepare to become irrationally invested in five numbers in a row.

The Selkirk Wednesday Book Club meets at the library at 1 p.m. to discuss Miss Morgan’s Book Brigade by Janet Skeslien Charles. A socially acceptable reason to ignore everyone and read beforehand.

Cornhole takes over the rink at the Fisherville Lions Club Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. It’s basically competitive beanbag throwing, but with standings and consequences.

The Fisherville Lions Club hosts Seniors Hoss Thursday at 1:30 p.m. Cards will be dealt, strategies deployed, and absolutely nobody will be taking it personally.

Cruise Night at Three Seasons Ice Cream Parlour runs Thursday from 4 to 9 p.m. Classic cars, ice cream and five hours of people saying, “They don’t make them like that anymore.”
