Here's What's Happening in Haldimand County This Weekend

September may be here, but Haldimand County isn’t exactly easing quietly into fall. Labour Day weekend has arrived with live music, festivals, racing, karaoke, barbecues and enough things happening to make your couch feel a little neglected.

One of the biggest events of the weekend is the Hagersville Lions’ Summer’s End Festival, returning Saturday with a Wild West show, car show, arts and crafts, free food and a full afternoon of live music. Cayuga has a busy Saturday too, with Ruthven Park’s Celtic Festival bringing Highland cows, Celtic music, historic demonstrations and family activities to the grounds.

If you prefer your weekend considerably louder, Toronto Motorsports Park has its Labour Day Weekend Spectacular running Friday through Sunday. Expect NHRA racing, Pro Mods, jet-powered dragsters and even a wheel-standing fire truck. Subtlety will not be part of the program.

There’s plenty of live music around the county too. Cam Silver is at Muck’s, Liam McGarry is at Concession Road Brewing, Ray Lyle is at the Dunnville Legion, Talisman is at The Mudcat, and New Amsterdam has Sledge Hammered and the Forever Mac duo. Karaoke fans have several chances to grab a microphone, particularly in Dunnville, which appears determined to hear everyone sing at least once.

Food is also doing some heavy lifting this weekend. Julia’s Charity has free groceries Friday and a pay-what-you-can barbecue Saturday, while the Walpole Antique Farm Machinery Association is serving its Beef BBQ Saturday evening.

And because it’s a long weekend, Monday gets in on the action too, with a Back to School BBQ and Snack Giveaway in Caledonia, trivia at Hammer Hogs and the Ancaster Toy & Collectibles Expo nearby.

Summer may be ending, but Haldimand County is making it leave through the gift shop.

Labour Day Weekend Spectacular (Sept 4-6th)  2-for-1 Spectator Admission for all Haldimand, Norfolk, Six Nations and MCFN Residents.  It's our last major racing event of the season, and the last long weekend of the summer! We've put together a solid lineup of both feature cars and racing series. You'll see everything from jet dragsters and wheel-standing fire trucks to IHRP Pro/Mods and Nostalgia Funny Cars, and the John Scotti NHRA Nationals. We hope to see you at the track!

Caledonia

The Make It Matter Events Back to School BBQ & Snack Giveaway takes place Monday from noon to 3 p.m. at the Caledonia Lions Hall. Bring a couple of bags to fill with free back-to-school snacks, plus enjoy hot dogs, cookie decorating and colouring while supplies last.

The Caledonia Renaissance Faire takes over the Caledonia Fairgrounds Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with knights, horseback competitions, archery, axe throwing, birds of prey, blacksmiths, live music, medieval merchants and plenty more. Turkey legs are involved, so clearly they’ve done their research.

Cypress 55+ has its walking group, line dancing and Women’s Social Friday. Three activities, which is already more ambitious than most long-weekend plans.

Hammer Hogs has karaoke Friday, live music Saturday and trivia Monday. Sing, listen, think. In that order.

Toronto Motorsports Park’s Labour Day Weekend Spectacular runs Friday through Sunday with NHRA racing, jet-powered dragsters, Pro Mods, a wheel-standing fire truck, live music, food trucks and pit access. Quiet weekend plans are available elsewhere.

Ruthven Park hosts its Celtic Festival Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with Celtic music, Highland cows, historic demonstrations, vendors, family activities and mansion tours. The Highland cows will almost certainly be photographed more than everything else combined.

The Cayuga Legion has Card Bingo Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Nothing brings a room together quite like everybody waiting for the same square.

Julia’s Charity is giving away a truckload of free groceries Friday starting at noon. And yes, an actual truckload.

The Dunnville Farmers Market is open Saturday from 7 a.m. to noon. Go early enough and you can still pretend you’re the kind of person who gets things accomplished before breakfast.

The Dunnville Legion has karaoke Friday from 6 to 10 p.m. If you’ve been waiting all week to unleash your version of Sweet Caroline, this is your moment.

Sledge Hammered plays New Amsterdam Friday night at 8 p.m. The band name suggests Sunday may be required for recovery.

The grill is hot at Julia’s Charity Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with hamburgers and hot dogs available on a pay-what-you-can basis. Lunch plans: solved.

The legendary Ray Lyle plays the Dunnville Legion Saturday from 2 to 5 p.m. If you know, you know. If you don’t, Saturday seems like a good time to find out.

Talisman plays The Mudcat Saturday night. Dunnville has apparently decided nobody needs to spend the long weekend at home.

The Forever Mac duo plays New Amsterdam Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. Fleetwood Mac fans have their Sunday afternoon sorted.

Julia’s Charity’s Catch the Ace jackpot is now estimated at $12,500. Get your tickets before Monday night’s draw. That’s enough money to make Tuesday morning considerably more interesting.

Jesus Festival takes over Gage Park in Hamilton Friday and Saturday, beginning with an evening of worship Friday from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday’s festival runs from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. with live music, speakers, activities and family fun.

Kim Mitchell closes out the SANDPINES Campfire Concert Series at Lions Park in Port Rowan Saturday. Gates open at 6 p.m., with food trucks, a beer and wine garden and games before the music starts. Kim Mitchell hits the stage at 8:45 p.m. Patio lanterns seem particularly appropriate for this one.

The Ancaster Fairgrounds hosts the Ancaster Toy & Collectibles Expo Monday from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Toys, comics, cards and collectibles will be up for grabs. Your childhood wants its money back.

Port Rowan Bayfest takes over the village for Labour Day weekend with live music, a family movie night, fishing derby, eating contests, tug of war, car shows, vendors and plenty more.
