Here's What's Happening in Haldimand County This Week
It’s the final weekend of September, and apparently Haldimand County has decided we should squeeze absolutely everything possible out of it.
Sports fans have a busy one ahead. The Ontario Challenge Cup USC Fastball Tournament takes over Jarvis Lions Park all weekend, Rumble on the River brings amateur boxing to Dunnville Saturday night, and Toronto Motorsports Park has the Race Cayuga Sportsman Series. If you’d rather participate than watch, the Grand River Rowing Club is offering a free Try Rowing Day Saturday in Cayuga. No word on whether yelling “stroke!” makes you look experienced.
Saturday is particularly ridiculous in Dunnville, where you can hit a fall market, repair something at the Repair Café, donate to the Rotary food and bottle drive, make a dangly-leg scarecrow, get somebody dunked at the Legion and still have time for live music. Julia’s is also giving away another truckload of free groceries today, because apparently a normal Friday wasn’t busy enough.
Elsewhere, Fisherville has Singles in the Sticks Saturday night, Sweets Church is holding an all-ages square dance Friday, and Hillbilly Farm Market is opening its off-grid homestead for behind-the-scenes tours. Hagersville has live music, crafting, candle making and another push to fill a Heaslip Ford van with at least 1,000 pounds of food for local food banks.
There are also farmers markets, euchre, darts, garage sales, live bands and enough food events to make cooking at home seem unnecessarily ambitious.
September is going out busy. Might as well go with it.

The Corvairs are home Saturday night against Welland. Puck drops at 7:30 p.m. Time to make some noise for the home team.
Hammer Hogs has karaoke Friday, live music Saturday and trivia Monday. Sing, listen, think. In that order.
Cypress 55+ has a walking group and line dancing this morning, with tai chi and Euchre Club on Monday. Start moving, finish shuffling.
The Caledonia Legion fires up the barbecue Friday from 5 to 7 p.m., followed by Forever Song and open mic from 7 to 10. Come hungry, stay for the music.

Cayuga
Toronto Motorsports Park hosts the Race Cayuga Sportsman Series this weekend. Things are about to get loud.
The Cayuga Legion has Van Moon playing Saturday from 4 to 7 p.m., with beef on a bun served from 5 to 6:30. Music and dinner. Saturday handled.
Crafternoons returns to the Cayuga Library today at 1 p.m. This month’s project is rope pumpkins, because apparently even rope is ready for fall.
The Grand River Rowing Club hosts a free Try Rowing Day Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Bob Baigent Memorial Park. Give it a row.
The Cayuga Food Bank holds its monthly garage sale Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. Bargain hunting that helps a good cause.
The Cayuga Legion has euchre Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. and darts Wednesday at 7:30. Two nights, two chances to get competitive.

The Dunnville Legion has its meat draw tonight at 5 p.m., followed by a chili cook-off at 7. Meat first, more meat later.
Mudcat Bowling Centre has Silver City Steel Saturday night. Bowling shoes optional for the dancing.
Rumble on the River brings amateur boxing to the Lifespan Centre Saturday, with doors opening at 6 p.m. The gloves are on.
The John Atlee Band plays Sandy Acres Park R-Bar tonight at 8 p.m. Start the weekend loud.
The Minga hosts another Repair Café Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Bring something broken and give it one more chance.
Julia’s is giving away a truckload of free groceries today starting at noon. Free groceries remain very difficult to argue with.
Cruze performs at New Amsterdam tonight at 8 p.m. Your Friday night soundtrack has options.
3 Beez in a Car’s 14th Annual Fall Market happens Saturday at 10 a.m. at 741 Concession 2 Road South. Fall shopping season has officially begun.
The Dunnville Farmers Market runs today from 2 to 7 p.m. Get the good stuff before somebody else does.
The Dunnville Rotary Club holds a food and bottle drive Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at the Farmers Market. Bring donations and help fill some shelves.
The Dunnville Legion has euchre Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Bring a partner you’re prepared to forgive.
The Dunnville Legion brings out the dunk tank Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m., followed by the Allen Bros Band from 4 to 8. Dunk first, dance later.
The Over 60 Euchre Club meets Thursday from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Dunnville Optimist Club. Experience counts.
